Congregation Bene Shalom is an inclusive synagogue. We welcome people from all walks of life. We were established 48 years ago by deaf Jews who sought a welcoming religious community. We respect deaf culture and most of our services and activities are sign language interpreted. Many deaf children have celebrated bar/bat mitzvah at our synagogue and our seminary has deaf rabbinical teachers and students. We offer sign language classes taught by our signing choir director, Sari Daybrook, who herself is deaf.

We share a unique way of making Judaism relevant. Our founding Rabbi, Douglas Goldhamer, is a well-respected scholar of Kabbalah who translates ancient prayers and meditations that were unknown to the public at large and makes these works accessible to us. Rabbi Goldhamer and our Assistant Rabbi, Shari Chen, offer educational classes and one-on-one healing prayer. Every congregant has a meaningful relationship with our rabbis. Our cantorial soloist, Charlene Brooks, offers the traditional chants and melodies, and often writes and performs her own creative melodies from the heart, her expressions of love for Judaism. Our ethos of inclusion extends to non-Jews who have the opportunity to be full participating member if they so desire.

Please join us for services at Congregation Bene Shalom and experience the joy and soul of being with Jewish friends at a uniquely inclusive synagogue.
